Jobs In Tourism
Spring
is here and BC's resorts and lodges are getting ready to throw
open their doors to tourists. Now is a good time to consider
working in tourism, the world's largest and fastest growing
industry. According to a Tourism BC fact sheet, over 235,000
people in BC are employed in tourism-related businesses (one
out of every eight workers in the province). Between 1989-1997,
BC's tourism industry increased its workforce by nearly 50,000
workers.
Locally,
tourism has traditionally been based on the sport fishery.

Employment Opportunities
The food and beverage sector employs nearly half of all workers
in tourism-related industries. Other sectors are transportation
(22%), accommodation (16%), attractions and cultural tourism
(8%), and adventure tourism, the travel trade, events and
conferences, and tourism services (these four sectors make
up the remaining 9%).
Skills gained by working in the tourism industry are often
transferable to other occupations, and if you like to travel,
possibilities to work abroad in tourism are plentiful. There
are over 400 occupations in tourism. Here are some tourism
